The world population continues to grow. The United Nations (UN) estimates that the global population reached 7.7 billion in April 2019, with annual growth of 83 million, about 1.1%. About 227,000 people are added every day. This means that growth has slowed somewhat compared to 2007, when it was around 1.24%. The peak of population growth was between 1965 and 1970 when it was 2.05%. About 60% of the current world population lives in Asia, with China having 1.4 billion (19%) and India 1.3 billion (18%) by far the largest population. Of the larger countries, Nigeria is the country with the fastest growing population, while Africa is the fastest growing continent. Half of the growth between 2017 and 2050 is expected to come from just nine countries: India, Nigeria, Congo-Kinshasa, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Uganda and Indonesia.
